This lesson highlights impervious surfaces and how water travels differently in a natural vs. urban habitat. Through educational videos, the audience approaches the subject of runoff and its hidden effects.
They are water-resistant materials, like concrete on sidewalks, asphalt on roads and parking lots, and rooftops. Unlike grass and dirt that absorb water and hold it, impervious surfaces cause water to flow right over it!
Do not allow replenishing of the groundwater and this can cause the water levels to drop
During storm events, the large amount of runoff can overflow streams and break down stream bank walls
Toxic chemicals can be carried directly into streams, wetlands and the ocean
As water flows through the city, it takes pollutants with it!
Listen to the students of Long Beach, California as they describe how urban runoff and water pollution affects them!
